Experience The Vulcano Mud Baths. A Natural Wonder To Soothe Mind And Body.

The Vulcano mud baths are a popular tourist attraction on the island, which is just north of Sicily. If you are planning a Sicily vacation, try to make time to include a trip to the island, even if only for an afternoon. It could be good for your health.

The mud baths, called Laghetto di Fanghi, are celebrated for the health benefits that they provide. Like other hot springs, the water is rich in sulfur, which has anti-fungal activity. Other minerals in the mud are good for the skin’s health. They help pull excessive oils and dirt out of the pores. For achy joints, there is nothing like a hot bath.

If you arrive on the island by ferry or hydrofoil (recommended), the bath is a short walk from the dock. Bring an old swimsuit, towels and a change of clothes. A small fee is charged to enter the area and to shower afterwards.

Bathers cover themselves with the warm mineral-rich mud, first, and then enter the spring-warmed sea to wash off. The water here is a bit different from what you will find at other springs, because you are bathing in a mixture of sea water and spring water. There are beneficial components in both.

If you are a hiker, there is another reason to include a trip to Vulcano on your Sicily vacation. It is a short hike from the Vulcano mud baths to Fossa. Round trip, it takes about three hours to complete, but it is not to be missed. Fossa is the center of a recently active volcano. The crater is huge. On the west side of the crater is a fumarole field. It is one of the few places on the earth’s surface where you can see molten sulfur.

A trip to the island would be a quiet respite for your busy Sicily vacation. There are only a couple of bars and hotels on the island. It is not a “hotbed” of activity. A good idea is to hike to Fossa and then stop at the baths for a hot soak, before you make the trip back to the main island.

The only drawback, if it can be called one, is the smell. You do get used to it after a while, but because of the sulfur, the air smells a bit like rotten eggs. Still, no Sicily vacation would be complete without at least a quick trip to the Vulcano mud baths.
