Sicily Agritourism Or Sicily Villas... Which Is Right For You?

The term Sicily agritourism is reserved for working farms, many of which are family operated. You will be staying with other guests, as well as the people that own or operate the farm. The estate generally includes vineyards and orchards. Livestock is typically present. Some farms offer horseback riding.

The meals are prepared using produce grown on the farm or by local growers. Meats, wines and cheeses are usually produced by the farm owners. Your accommodation might be a room in a farmhouse, a converted mill or monastery. Some of the popular choices are country estates or ranches that have been converted to lodges. Sicily villas are not converted farmhouses or ranches. They are basically rental homes for families, friends or individuals that have planned an extended stay of a week, a month, a season or longer. You will need to stock the groceries yourself and arrange transportation. The main attraction is privacy. As there are no other guests at Sicily villas, you have complete privacy.

If you choose agritourism, there may be several other guests, depending on the number of rooms on the estate or farm. Both choices are appealing. On the one hand, you can meet new people. On the other, you can spend time alone with people that you care about.

You will find that both choices typically have pools. One of the converted monasteries boasts “mini-apartments”, which means that there is a private bath and kitchenette. Many of the farms and estates are located in the Madonie Mountains or near Mount Etna. Others are located close to popular tourist attractions, such as those in Siracusa. With a rental car and good directions, you can tour the ancient ruins and take in all of the sites, without being bothered by the noise of the nightlife and traffic.

Prices for Sicily villas vary widely. But, in general, they are affordable alternatives to the many hotels on the island. Bear in mind that communication may be difficult, unless you speak the language. Genuine Sicily agritourism, particularly in the smaller retreats, consists of rural families that may not speak English. You may need a translator.
