Sciacca Sicily, Beautiful Beaches And A Charming Sicilian Town

Sciacca Sicily is a picture perfect town built on a beautiful cliffside. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea on the south-western coast of Sicily. It's a thirty-minute drive east of the temples in Selinunte and just under an hour from Agrigento. Artisan shops are a big part of Sciacca, selling all types of ceramics. It's also known for it's large fleet of fishing boats and it's Thermal Spa complex.

Sciacca has been known and respected for it's spas since as far back as the Roman empire. Women and men alike would visit the spas on a daily basis. The spas were used for medicinal purposes as well as meeting places. Also in the city are caves located on Mount Kronio. These contained steambaths which were used to cure many ailments.

Sciacca's main attractions are its ceramic shops, fishing fleet, famous Carnevale, thermal baths and beautiful beaches. The ceramic workshops still use the traditional methods of creating it's crafts. In the dock, hundreds of fishing boats can be seen.

Twice a year, February 2 and August 15, there is a celebration for The Madonna. The "Carnevale" festival is considered to be the top "Mardi Gras" parade in Sicily. It's held every year just before the start of Lent. A great source of pride for the people of this beautiful town, they create many floats with music and dance.

Two beautiful Sicilian beaches in Sciacca are the San Marco and Contrada Sobareto. The thermal and mud baths are among the best of their kind in the Mediterranean. The seafood is fantastic. What else would you expect from a town known for it's fishermen?

The Fisherman's Feast happens once a year. It began in Boston in 1911 and it's history goes as far back as the 16th century in Sciacca Sicily. It's based on the devotion of the fishermen from Sciacca to the Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of Help). The fishermen came to America in the early 1900's, bringing along with them, their traditions.

The feast has not changed much since it began 90 years ago...The smell of delicious food in the air and the streets brightly lit. With it's charming traditions and some of the most beautiful Mediterranean beaches, Sciacca is a wonderful place for a Sicilian vacation.
