It's a small, quaint village next to one of the most beautiful Sicilian beaches. A coastal town in Northern Sicily, Cefalu has plenty of Sicilian charm. A favorite Sicilian vacation spot for Europeans, and myself, it's becoming more and more popular amongst everyone else as well. Even while keeping it's Old World charm as a fishing village, the increasing amount of tourists give a boost to their economy and tourism industry. There are many cafes, pubs and hotels around. There are also lots of great restaurants to pick from in Cefalu. The beach in Cefalu is one of the main attractions and definitely worth checking out. It has a very fine, golden brown colored sand, and stretches across from the older more historic part, to the newer area by Club Med. Remember, though, if you take your Sicilian vacation in the summer, the beach will be much more crowded. I learned this the hard way.
If you're the athletic type, you can make your way up the “rock” or “la rocca.” I love the view from the top. It's spectacular, looking over the town and all the red roofs on the houses. Not to mention the Mediterranean Sea, complete with oranges, figs, almond and olive trees. Also very impressive is the Temple of Diana. This structure dates back to 5th Century B.C. There are also remains of a medieval fortress. Be sure to bring good hiking boots and water. Before you have dinner, you can stroll through the cobblestone streets, stopping in the squares to people-watch or enjoy the quaint shops and sights. Another must-see is the cathedral. It was built in 1131 by Roger II. When you see it at night, lit up with the mountain behind it, you will be amazed.
Also interesting is the Medieval wash house - with a natural spring. And the Osterio Magno which, according to legend, was the home of King Roger. It's now used to exhibit various types of art. Just south of Cefalu Sicily is the beautiful Madonie National Park with its charming towns and villages. It's not surprising that Cefalu is one of the most popular tourist towns in Sicily. Whether you're looking for a breathtakingly beautiful Sicilian beach, an excellent hiking adventure complete with dazzling views, or a romantic Sicily vacation, Cefalu Sicily has something for everyone.
